Jack

You’re listening to the A-Z English podcast.

00:00:14

Jack

Welcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and I’m here with my co-host social and today social and I are going to play a little game here. I’m going to give social a topic and we are going to discuss that topic. But there is.

00:00:30

Jack

A keyword and I will let you know what the keyword is right now.

00:00:38

Jack

The keyword is nature.

00:00:42

Jack

But social does not know what the keyword is, and every time she says the keyword a little bell will sound and that will be one.

00:00:57

Jack

Point against her. OK. And then when it’s my turn, we will discuss a different topic. And if I say the keyword.

00:01:07

Jack

More times than she does. Then she is the winner. So what are the benefits of outdoor activities?

00:01:18

Xochitl

I think the.

00:01:20

Xochitl

Benefits of outdoor activities would be improved mood.

00:01:26

Xochitl

A clear mind.

00:01:29

Xochitl

And better health.

00:01:32

Jack

OK.

00:01:33

Xochitl

How about you Jack overhead?

00:01:33

Jack

And yeah, like what about what about like getting outside, you know, experiencing the, you know, the trees and the the looking at the sky and the clouds and things like that, is that is that attractive to you at all?

00:01:52

Xochitl

Yeah, I would think.

00:01:54

Xochitl

Seeing the trees and the clouds and the general scenery is definitely.

00:02:01

Xochitl

Unattractive part.

00:02:03

Xochitl

Of of the benefits of outdoor exercise.

00:02:07

Jack

Yeah, yeah. Are you? Do you like camping?

00:02:11

Xochitl

UM, yeah, I do like camping. My dad used to.

00:02:15

Xochitl

Drag us out.

00:02:16

Xochitl

Camping. When I was a kid, which made me not.

00:02:18

Xochitl

Like it?

00:02:21

Xochitl

But as I’ve gotten.

00:02:22

Xochitl

Older I really. I really enjoy it.

00:02:26

Xochitl

I think just being able to be in that environment you know is really enriching.

00:02:33

Jack

Yeah, yeah. I mean, I’m not a big like nature lover. Personally. I kind of like the, the, the comforts of the city and things like that. But I mean, what about you, can you go both ways?

00:02:47

Jack

You. You’re OK with either or.

00:02:51

Xochitl

It’s hard because for me, I do like certain city comforts. One big thing for me is I like having access to the shower, and I also like having access to a real toilet. And so the problem about being in an outdoor environment is that.

00:03:10

Jack

When nature calls.

00:03:10

Xochitl

You don’t.

00:03:12

Xochitl

Yeah, you you have to use what’s available to.

00:03:16

Xochitl

You, which sometimes is not the most comfortable, and that’s one big thing I don’t like about it.

00:03:24

Jack

One of my dreams is to like live what we call they called be a digital nomad so I can live in a van with my wife and we can, you know, sleep in the van. But the one issue that I think is the most difficult to reconcile is the toilet issues, you know.

00:03:44

Jack

It’s just like, how do what do you do like there? I I don’t think I I need the comforts of like a house, living an apartment. Living. I agree with you.

00:03:56

Jack

All right. Now that concludes the conversation. Again, I I’m not going to tell you if who the winner is until the end of the episode and social your topic is. Let’s see here the benefits of reading.

00:04:16

Jack

So you can ask me that question.

00:04:19

Xochitl

Jack, what do you think the benefits?

00:04:20

Xochitl

Of reading are.

00:04:23

Jack

The keyword is novel.

00:04:27

Jack

OK, the benefits of reading?

00:04:30

Jack

Are are various. It will improve your.

00:04:37

Jack

Uh. Vocabulary. So you’ll you’ll be able to, uh, memorize more, learn more words and just become more proficient in whatever language you’re reading in.

00:04:53

Jack

He makes you more informed about the world, so it just, I think reading makes people smarter. I mean, I I know it’s an unpopular thing to say these days, but I do think that people that read more are just and for and what it doesn’t mean like.

00:05:11

Jack

They’re more intelligent. It just means they’re kind of they’re more informed, which I think does translate to like being smarter, you know, so they know more things because they read so.

00:05:24

Jack

I don’t know what do you.

00:05:25

Jack

Think, do you agree with that?

00:05:27

Xochitl

Yeah, I definitely.

00:05:29

Xochitl

Agree with that.

00:05:30

Xochitl

Jack, what would you say one of your?

00:05:35

Xochitl

Favorite books is.

00:05:37

Xochitl

And when did you read that book?

00:05:40

Jack

Yes, one of my favorite books is you.

00:05:43

Jack

I really love.

00:05:46

Jack

I really love books from like the early 20th century, so like Ernest Hemingway.

00:05:58

Jack

And I’ve F Scott Fitzgerald. That era is like my favorite for for novels. And there a farewell to arms is a book written by I just said his name. And now.

00:06:17

Jack

OK.

00:06:19

Jack

Ernest Hemingway, thank.

00:06:20

Jack

Yeah. A farewell to arms is is a story of a soldier. That.

00:06:27

Jack

Is fighting in World War One and.

00:06:31

Jack

Yeah, it’s a really.

00:06:32

Jack

It’s just a wonderful war and war story and so and love story as well and and a tragedy.

00:06:41

Jack

And I remember reading that book, and when I used to read a lot of novels in my early 20.

00:06:47

Jack

And now I only read nonfiction.

00:06:51

Jack

I know I don’t.

00:06:52

Jack

Read novels anymore. I can’t. I think the last novel I read was probably 13 or 14 years ago, and it was a Jonathan Franzen novel. But yeah. So yeah, that’s my favorite era is the the the kind of, I think they call them the lost.

00:07:11

Jack

Generation or something, is it? Or the?

00:07:12

Jack

Yeah, yeah, the the 1920s.

00:07:15

Xochitl

The silent generation.

00:07:17

Jack

Yeah, 1920s, the the the Paris, you know, Picasso, Hemingway, that, that whole era. Yeah.

00:07:26

Jack

I love it.

00:07:28

Jack

Seems very romantic that period.

00:07:30

Xochitl

Yeah. And what? What book form would you would you say that you enjoy the most, would you say?

00:07:39

Xochitl

That you’re like a.

00:07:42

Xochitl

You know, uh, do you like a short novella? Do you like a short story? Do you like a longer novel?

00:07:50

Xochitl

You know.

00:07:50

Jack

Yeah. So I’m not really into, I don’t. I don’t read a lot of novellas. When I was reading the opposite of nonfiction.

00:08:04

Jack

I don’t know.

00:08:05

Jack

I wonder. I’m trying not to say the keyword here. The opposite of nonfiction.

00:08:13

Jack

Then I I tend to read longer books. You know, they’re like.

00:08:20

Jack

304 hundred pages. You know, something like that. But I did.

00:08:25

Jack

Read war and.

00:08:25

Jack

Peace in high school and that’s got like 500 pages and that it’s a little too much for me. It’s too. It’s too big. So I I enjoy a kind of, you know, the regular size model.

00:08:40

Jack

I don’t know. Does that make sense?

00:08:42

Xochitl

Yeah, that does make.

00:08:43

Xochitl

Sense. OK, I think that pretty much concludes the conversation.

00:08:43

Jack

OK, OK.

00:08:51

Jack

So here are the results of today’s game. Social was clearly the winner today, she said. The keyword nature a total of 0 times during the conversation. Jack, on the other hand.

00:09:11

Jack

Said the keyword novel.

00:09:14

Jack

Exactly 6 times during the conversation, which gives him -6 points, and so social is today’s champion and Jack is today’s loser. But if you like this episode, we will try this again.

00:09:33

Jack

Another time.
