Jack
Welcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and I’m with my co-host social today and we are going to do top five desert Island questions. And so today’s question is social. What are your top five?
00:00:31
Jack
Desert island.
00:00:33
Jack
Albums, music albums.
00:00:38
Xochitl
Uh, my God. I mean, this one’s a little bit hard, but I’m gonna have to say Shakira, MTV Unplugged.
00:00:48
Jack
Interesting. I have two MTV on plugs in.
00:00:48
Xochitl
Shakira yeah.
00:00:52
Jack
My top five.
00:00:55
Jack
Yeah. Interesting. OK.
00:00:57
Xochitl
Yeah, I definitely say Shakira’s MTV unplugged album Shakira, volume one.
00:01:04
Jack
So that’s your second choice.
00:01:06
Xochitl
That’s my second choice, yes.
00:01:07
Jack
OK, so two Shakira albums.
00:01:08
Jack
Wow, you’re OK. I didn’t know you were that.
00:01:09
Xochitl
She can’t albums.
00:01:10
Xochitl
She’s yes, I love Shakira. Especially OG. Shakira is just sublime amazingness, musas by Natalia Lafourcade.
00:01:11
Jack
Big of a Shakira fan.
00:01:14
Jack
OK.
00:01:24
Jack
OK.
00:01:25
Jack
I have no idea what you just said, but I’m I’m going to say, OK.
00:01:25
발표자
UM.
00:01:28
Xochitl
Moses is like, muses, kind of, and that’s what it means translates to Natalia Lafourcade is a Mexican singer-songwriter, and the Musas album is based also boleros, which is a traditional like Mexican genre of old style like 50s music.
00:01:46
Jack
Ohh I can almost kind of picture it in my mind, you know.
00:01:51
발표자
Yeah you can.
00:01:52
Xochitl
Get like the vibes a little bit.
00:01:54
Xochitl
And so she wrote these songs.
00:01:56
Xochitl
Inspired by that time period.
00:01:58
Xochitl
And invited a lot of artists from that time period onto the album as features, and it’s an absolutely beautiful album. I definitely recommend it. So that knocks out three.
00:02:06
Jack
OK, cool.
00:02:11
Xochitl
And then, OK, this one I think.
00:02:18
Xochitl
I gotta Google.
00:02:19
Xochitl
It to make sure it’s the right one.
00:02:24
Xochitl
Oh great, I remember what it is, Jesse. Enjoy, which are another Mexican singer-songwriter group, and their album is Gunjin sequel Pero, which means who should the dog stay with? Because it’s like a breakup album.
00:02:40
Xochitl
And it’s a.
00:02:41
Jack
Who gets the dog? OK. Yeah, that’s sad. Yeah.
00:02:43
Xochitl
Yes. Who gets the dog? So it’s a great album because it was iconic.
00:02:54
Xochitl
In the time period that it was that it came out for and.
00:02:58
Jack
So what was the time period when? What are?
00:03:00
Xochitl
It came out in like the 20 tens, I believe.
00:03:00
Jack
We talking here?
00:03:03
Jack
Ohh. OK OK. This is not like I.
00:03:05
Jack
Thought you were like 1970s or 80s, OK?
00:03:05
Xochitl
No it.
00:03:07
Xochitl
No, no, it was just iconic for the 20 tens because it was like a shift in.
00:03:12
Xochitl
The genre they’re they’re genre sort of Mexican music was like a very indie style. That was kind of unheard of at the time. So I think that’s.
00:03:22
Xochitl
Like a big shift.
00:03:23
Xochitl
And fifth one.
00:03:30
Xochitl
Uh, my God, I’m battling here.
00:03:33
Jack
I know the fifth one is always the hardest one because it’s like you’re excluding 100 other ones that you love, you know.
00:03:42
Xochitl
That’s the hard part about it.
00:03:48
Xochitl
I think.
00:03:51
Xochitl
80 Gourmet and trio Los Panchos so 80 gourmet. I guess her her English name is 80 Gorm. She’s a she’s an English speaking singer. I believe she’s from the US and she made a an A Spanish album. Spanish speaking album with trio.
00:04:10
Xochitl
Sponges, which is like a.
00:04:11
Xochitl
Mariachi group.
00:04:12
Xochitl
And she did a bunch of classics like Salami and Bill Canela and like.
00:04:18
Xochitl
All these boleros bolero.
00:04:19
Xochitl
Which is a genre I was talking about.
00:04:21
Xochitl
Earlier, she did a bunch of these songs in this genre with this group, Joe punches and I.
00:04:29
Xochitl
It’s beautiful, absolutely beautiful album.
00:04:33
Xochitl
Yeah. So I’m going to have to go. Yeah. That was like from the 50s. Probably. Yeah.
00:04:34
발표자
OK.
00:04:38
Jack
Yeah. And we can get a a good feeling here for your musical. I think musical taste like you. Definitely. Yeah. Well, it was female, you know, like, like, Latino. Sorry. Latina kind of singers. Yeah.
00:04:45
Xochitl
Yeah, it’s all women like.
00:04:57
Jack
But it’s it’s very popular right now too. So very, very beautiful.
00:05:04
Jack
Alright, so it’s my.
00:05:05
Xochitl
Turn now. Yes, it’s your turn.
00:05:07
Jack
OK. All right. We’re going to go old school here 9. We’re going to go all the way.
00:05:11
Jack
Back to 1994 Nirvana.
00:05:16
Jack
MTV plug.
00:05:16
Xochitl
Ohh my. That was gonna be that was it was.
00:05:19
Xochitl
Hard cause I left that one.
00:05:20
Xochitl
Off of mine.
00:05:21
Xochitl
But it was hard to leave it.
00:05:23
Xochitl
Off, yeah.
00:05:23
Jack
Oh, I love that album and I can, you know, it’s like, these are all albums that on my list that I can listen to all the.
00:05:32
Jack
Way through from front to back.
00:05:34
Jack
Like I don’t skip one song on the on the album, which is weird because I usually used to buy albums and then I would listen to one or two tracks. You know the the title tracks or the title track and then maybe at the singles and I would never listen to the kind of the the other songs on the album.
00:05:54
Jack
But I love all of the songs on this album, so MTV 1994, I believe, Nirvana, MTV Unplugged, #2.
00:06:06
Jack
Is Alice In Chains MTV Unplugged, which is? And if, if our listeners don’t know Alice In Chains, was a kind of heavy metal grunge rock band from Seattle in the early 1990s.
00:06:26
Jack
And the unfortunately, the lead singer, Lane Staley, died of a drug overdose. Quite.
00:06:34
Jack
A few years ago.
00:06:36
Xochitl
Right on.
00:06:37
Jack
Yeah, it was really terrible. He suffered a a bad drug addiction, like so many artists do. And so yeah, but that they did an MTV unplugged session that had all such great kind of acoustic versions of their.
00:06:56
Jack
Amazing songs. So I love that album #3 is Weezer is a band and they have their very first album. Was this blue album. It’s like a blue. It’s almost like solid blue.
00:07:14
Jack
CD OK like the it’s just a solid blue color and it says Weezer or something and that whole album I can listen to all the way through and I I love that album. It’s just a a brilliant, brilliant album.
00:07:35
Jack
Do you know Weezer? Do you ever listen to Weezer?
00:07:39
발표자
There’s still.
00:07:41
Xochitl
I think I I I’ve I’ve heard of them, but I don’t. I couldn’t say. Oh, I know that song or something, but I think I’m sure that if you played a song of them, I would probably recognize it.
00:07:44
Jack
OK, OK.
00:07:51
Jack
Yeah, I think maybe our only crossover here in this Venn diagram between the two of us is Nirvana. I think it’s it’s probably, but.
00:08:00
Xochitl
Yeah, that album specifically.
00:08:02
Jack
Yeah, #4, my fourth album is a kind of a weird choice, like a lot of people wouldn’t wouldn’t understand this choice, but.
00:08:13
Jack
It’s a. It’s a. It’s a single guy. Who? It. It sounds like a band, but it’s actually just one guy and it’s he’s called badly drawn boy. And he did a soundtrack for the movie about a boy, which came out about 1819 years ago.
00:08:35
Jack
It’s based on a A, a novel, and the movie is fantastic. I love it about a boy, but the the songs that he wrote for that album I can listen to that album all the way through. I just love it and I just think it’s amazing. So I.
00:08:54
Jack
That’s my number four album. Is the soundtrack to the movie about a boy by the artist, badly drawn boy.
00:09:04
Jack
And #5, I’m going to go, Bob Dylan, blonde on blonde, and that’s probably his most famous album. It’s got all the hits in there, but I can listen to that album over. I could listen to it multiple times in a row, just on a road trip. I’ll hit play.
00:09:24
Jack
Listen to the whole album. Go back to the beginning, listen to it again and find new things in there that are more interesting.
00:09:31
Jack
Uh. And so I I really, really love that album. So Bob Dylan blonde on blonde and I miss you.
00:09:40
Jack
Know I didn’t put any Beatles in there.
00:09:41
Xochitl
Bob Dylan is another one. My dad listened to as well. So.
00:09:45
Jack
Yeah, I’m. I’m sure your dad.
00:09:45
Xochitl
I am familiar.
00:09:46
Jack
And I probably have more more musical.
00:09:48
Xochitl
Yeah, I mean, I was introduced.
00:09:49
Jack
Taste or something? Yeah.
00:09:51
Xochitl
To Nirvana by my dad and then Bob Dylan. Also, my dad listened to a lot. So.
00:09:59
Xochitl
I’m familiar with Bob Dylan.
00:10:00
Jack
Ohh. Your dad listened to Nirvana as well.
00:10:03
Xochitl
Yeah, my dad also did listen to Nirvana.
00:10:05
Jack
Wow, OK, you dance cool. My dad listened to The Beach Boys and The Beatles.
00:10:12
Jack
You know that kind of that era? So he’s my dad’s a bit older than your dad though, so.
00:10:17
Xochitl
Yeah, your dad’s my dad’s.
00:10:20
Xochitl
Yeah, my dad’s, like, between your dad and your age, right, I guess.
00:10:25
Jack
Yeah, he’s like one generation. Well, he’s like an old.
00:10:28
Jack
Gen. Xer right?
00:10:30
Xochitl
Yeah, he’s like a really old Gen. Xer or like a.
00:10:33
Xochitl
Really young boomer.
00:10:35
Jack
Right, right. My dad’s a straight up boomer all the way, yeah.
00:10:42
Xochitl
Yeah. All right, listeners. Well, I am actually really interested to hear what your five favorite albums are, because I’m. I’m curious. I want to hear all these international music, because our listeners must have a lot. And I also want to know if you have any favorite English language albums. I think that would be really neat to know.
00:11:04
Xochitl
And do you find that English or that music is a way?
00:11:09
Xochitl
