In this idioms episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Jack explains the meaning of three idioms which use the word “ghost.”
“Give up the ghost”: This idiom means to die or stop working. It is often used when referring to machines or equipment that have stopped functioning. For example, “After years of service, the old car finally gave up the ghost.”
“Ghost town”: This idiom refers to a place or location that is largely deserted, empty, or devoid of activity. It can be used to describe a once-thriving area that has become abandoned or a place where very few people are present. For instance, “After the factory closed down, the entire area turned into a ghost town.”
“Ghosting” is a term commonly used in the context of dating and relationships, as well as in other interpersonal situations. It refers to the act of abruptly and intentionally cutting off all communication with someone, typically without explanation or warning. When someone “ghosts” another person, they cease all forms of contact, such as texts, calls, and social media interactions, and essentially disappear from the other person’s life.
