Transcript:

Jack
You’re listening to the A-Z English podcast.
00:00:14
Jack
Welcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and I’m one of the hosts of the podcast and today I am joined by three of my good friends, Leila Hendrick and me.
00:00:25
Jack
And we are actually doing a well, a kind of would you rather question and this was brought to me by Layla and the question is what would you sacrifice for one extra year of life so.
00:00:43
Jack
For example, if you were going to live to be 74 years old then.
00:00:50
Jack
You you sacrificed one year. You you only live to be 73 or sorry. You could live to be 75. Sorry you could live to be 75, but you have to sacrifice something. What would you give up?
00:01:05
Jack
To get one extra year.
00:01:08
Jack
And what we got to put some rules here. It can’t be like, oh, yeah, I’ll give away my pencil, this pencil. I’ll. I’ll give sacrifice. It’s got to be something that’s like important to you. Yeah, that’s necessary. Right. Right. So, Layla, what would you sacrifice?
00:01:29
Jack
For an extra year of life, and of course, there’s always the option to say nothing you could say I wouldn’t sacrifice anything.
00:01:37
Layla
Yeah, right.
00:01:39
Layla
Yeah. And as you, as you mentioned, Jack, the question represents something should be very, very serious and necessary because sacrifice, sacrifice, something that mean that means you have something.
00:01:58
Layla
You really need it. You would you. You couldn’t live without it, but you have to get rid of it for getting something and or maybe another. Something very precious. So for example.
00:02:14
Layla
In my case, I live in a hot country so.
00:02:19
Layla
Could I sacrifice?
00:02:23
Layla
Air conditioner air conditioning system to look just in the hot weather for one year.
00:02:32
Layla
It’s really hard. It’s really tough or maybe so it should be something very, very serious and necessary. I think maybe maybe about food as as long as I don’t care too much about food, so maybe I will sacrifice me.
00:02:34
Jack
Right.
00:02:48
Layla
It’s it’s easy for me to eat vegetables and the bread and something like that, so maybe I can live extra here. Just eating vegetables and without eating meat. I think that maybe.
00:03:04
Layla
I will say that.
00:03:06
Jack
This is interesting because if you give up meat, that may actually give you an extra year of life, maybe more just because eating meat.
00:03:11
May
OK.
00:03:14
Layla
Yeah, yeah.
00:03:16
Jack
Is kind of.
00:03:17
Jack
Not good for us, right. So you’re if you become a vegetarian, you might actually.
00:03:23
Jack
The You this might come true. This might be a real like realistic, not just a magical thing, you know, hypothetical. It could be real, yeah.
00:03:34
Layla
Yeah, it’s really hard without without having different types of food, but for some people, maybe it will be.
00:03:45
Layla
Possible like my situation?
00:03:48
Jack
Yeah, I couldn’t. I could not give up meat for, and I don’t think I could give up meat for an extra.
00:03:56
Jack
10 years I don’t.
00:03:58
Jack
Think I don’t think there are enough years to to, you know, to to, to, to make me give up meat.
00:04:02
Layla
Yeah, it’s really hot.
00:04:06
Jack
Ohh, but I would love to. I would love to be a vegetarian.
00:04:09
Jack
I I know it would be good for me.
00:04:11
Layla
But I will never sacrifice my phone and Internet. I I wouldn’t. Yeah.
00:04:16
May
Go on an Internet. OK. I was going to.
00:04:20
Jack
Say, would you give up?
00:04:21
Jack
English for an extra year of life, no.
00:04:23
Layla
No, I couldn’t.
00:04:27
Jack
Because like, you’re talking about quality of life, right, the quality is too good. You’d rather have a good like, you know, you’re still fairly young. So you, you know, you could live for another 40 or 50 years. That means for 40 or 50 years, you have no phone, no Internet, no English. That would be not worth it.
00:04:48
Jack
Right for one, OK.
00:04:50
Layla
I shouldn’t live without that.
00:04:52
Jack
OK, OK alright. Meat is gone. Phone is in.
00:04:57
Jack
Alright, I like it. I like.
00:04:58
Jack
It, Mr. Hendrick, what would you give up for one extra year of life?
00:05:09
Hendrick
Wow. To be honest, it’s quite hard for me to think, but.
00:05:15
May
I think.
00:05:17
Hendrick
I’m gonna give up with social media, yeah.
00:05:22
Hendrick
So I think I only have like a year or so. I just you know like want to.
00:05:29
Hendrick
Disappear from social media I think. Yeah. And then just lose contact with.
00:05:35
Hendrick
All of my friends, maybe so maybe after, you know, like I die.
00:05:39
Hendrick
So at least.
00:05:40
Hendrick
They don’t feel sad, like they don’t know anything about me. So yeah, I just want to, you know, sacrifice from social media.
00:05:49
Jack
So you’d give up Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, you just let it all go.
00:05:55
Hendrick
Exactly. Yeah. So I just don’t want. Yeah, I just don’t want, you know, like, my Internet friends feel sad about me.
00:06:04
Jack
Ohh boy. OK, interesting for one year.
00:06:09
Jack
It’s worth it.
00:06:10
Layla
So Hendrix sacrifice us. Yeah, yeah.
00:06:17
Jack
Hendrick is just a distant memory for us because we can’t we can’t reach.
00:06:23
Jack
Him. He ghosted us.
00:06:25
Hendrick
Ohh no yeah, but actually I think I.
00:06:29
Hendrick
Do that because I don’t want.
00:06:31
Hendrick
To make you guys feel sad.
00:06:36
Jack
All right. OK. OK. I I was going to say, why don’t you just give up Harry Potter? But.
00:06:41
Jack
That’s too hard.
00:06:42
Layla
OK.
00:06:44
Jack
Wow. No way. Impossible. OK. Social media. Harry Potter is in social media is out alright. OK. Hendrick, thank you for your answer. Thank you for your honesty.
00:06:56
Hendrick
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because, I mean, like, I have been spending a lot of time with social media. So I just want to sacrifice it.
00:07:06
Jack
So you can focus on your your masters.
00:07:08
Jack
Degree pH. D and yeah, sure.
00:07:10
Hendrick
No, because you.
00:07:11
Hendrick
Know like I only have like a year, you know? And you know, like, I also not spend a lot of time with my family because of social media. So maybe just the last.
00:07:26
Hendrick
One year from my life, so I just want to disappear from social media and maybe spending more time with my family or my friends in this reality life.
00:07:35
Jack
OK, Layla may, how long do you give? I give him three months and he’s.
00:07:39
Jack
Back on Facebook.
00:07:42
May
I I’ve been not even 3 days.
00:07:45
Jack
Not even 3 days. OK, I’ll give you 3 months. Just give you 3 days.
00:07:53
Jack
Interesting. Interesting. Very interesting. OK. May you had time to think now what can you give up?
00:07:58
May
OK.
00:08:01
Jack
Or an extra year of life.
00:08:04
May
This is extremely challenging for me, but I I think I have my choices. I will sacrifice.
00:08:16
May
My time of my.
00:08:17
May
Time and money, or maybe energy as well.
00:08:22
May
I will contribute some of my extra money to those who are in need, like probably home for children, home for the elderly, elderly people and maybe if I am, if I’m still available, I will.
00:08:43
May
Contribute some like some of my evening. I will help them.
00:08:49
May
To do some work like maybe I can teach them, teach them, teach the children in some English. Or maybe my my local language, so that is what.
00:09:02
May
That are the things that I will.
00:09:05
May
I feel that.
00:09:06
May
I can say goodbye.
00:09:08
Jack
So may I think you’re going to try to buy some time. That’s what it sounds.
00:09:11
Jack
Like to me.
00:09:13
Jack
You’re buying time. You’re like, I’m gonna buy. I’m gonna spend some money. I’m gonna do some work. I’m gonna buy.
00:09:14
Layla
Yeah, because.
00:09:18
Jack
That extra time.
00:09:18
May
I because I am grateful that I have not.
00:09:22
May
Yeah, you need to leave. So why don’t I?
00:09:25
May
Share it with us.
00:09:28
May
By doing something good.
00:09:29
May
At least when I’m no longer in the world, people will Remember Me.
00:09:32
May
Oh, she helped us before so.
00:09:37
May
I live a good name.
00:09:39
Jack
I mean, what? You’re what?
00:09:40
Jack
You’re saying is like straight from the, you know, religion, right? It’s better to give than to receive. Right. So you’re you’re describing that exactly, yeah.
00:09:52
May
I am seeing with each other. I already do. Well, well, I mean my financial is super stable. I’m secure.
00:10:01
May
So I’m very healthy at that time, so why not?
00:10:06
Jack
Yeah. No, I respect it. I I’ll accept that answer. I’ll accept. I think everybody’s answer is legitimate. And my answer is.
00:10:18
Jack
Yeah, my answer is nothing.
00:10:18
May
Yes, yes.
00:10:21
Jack
I will not sacrifice anything for one more year of life.
00:10:25
Jack
I’m just gonna let it. It’s. I’m just gonna let nature take its course. And if I die a year early, at least I enjoyed myself. You know what I mean? So.
00:10:37
Jack
It’s kind of like if you go to a party, you say you can have a you can have an OK time at this party for three hours or you can have a great time.
00:10:46
Jack
This party for two hours. I’ll have a great time for two hours and uh instead of an OK time for three hours. So yeah, time doesn’t matter. It’s quality, quality over quantity.
00:11:00
Jack
For me.
00:11:01
May
Yeah. So you will just you just eat and do whatever you like within the one year.
00:11:02
Layla
You’ve got it. Yeah, you’ve got it.
00:11:08
Jack
I’m just gonna do whatever I want. Eat what I want and let nature take its course. You know, when it’s my time, it’s my time.
00:11:16
May
Let’s decide.
00:11:21
May
Wait, answer.
00:11:22
Jack
Yeah, there you go.
