Jack

Z English podcast My name is Jack and I’m here.

00:00:37

Jack

With my co-host.

00:00:38

Jack

Social and today we are doing a quick chat episode and today’s quick chat question is.

00:00:47

Jack

Do you believe in the concept of fate that everything happens for a reason? So social, do you believe in fate?

00:01:00

Xochitl

Do I believe in fate well?

00:01:05

Xochitl

It This one is kind of hard. I don’t think there is a predetermined state or destiny.

00:01:14

Xochitl

But I think there’s kind of like a butterfly effect which for our listeners who don’t know what that is, it’s like a scientific term to describe how like a butterfly flaps its wings and it causes a chain of different reactions that leads up to.

00:01:34

Xochitl

Some big thing. It could be like a.

00:01:38

Xochitl

Like a hurricane, I think is the biggest example is, yeah.

00:01:41

Jack

Right, like a like a butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil, and there’s a hurricane in Florida because of that. You know something?

00:01:52

Xochitl

Yes, I think I believe kind of in like a butterfly effect with their personal choices like we could.

00:01:52

Jack

Like that, yeah.

00:02:02

Xochitl

It’s like yesterday I went out for a I went out to a party cause it’s Mexico’s Independence Day.

00:02:09

Xochitl

And and it’s like a butterfly effect because say you go out and you get robbed.

00:02:21

Xochitl

Then you lost all your money for the month, or you go out and you meet the love of your life and you end up getting married to them like it’s just so weird, because making one little choice like will I go out today or tomorrow?

00:02:42

Xochitl

Or am I going to go to the grocery store right now and you across the street and get hit by a car or you go to the grocery store and you’re the 100th customer and they give?

00:02:53

Xochitl

You $1,000,000.

00:02:55

Xochitl

Just like you just.

00:02:56

Xochitl

Never know where life is gonna take you on some really tiny decision.

00:02:57

발표자

OK.

00:03:02

Xochitl

And I’ve read a lot about that, like people who said they were a few minutes late to work, so they missed 9/11, which for our viewers who aren’t familiar, was a really huge tragedy in the United States. That happened when I was still in diapers. But the planes crashed in the Twin Towers and a lot.

00:03:19

Xochitl

Of people died and.

00:03:22

Xochitl

A lot of people talk about how they were minutes late to work and missed.

00:03:26

Xochitl

Dying and getting killed and caught up in that horrible disaster because of just like, ohh, their alarm didn’t go off or their alarm did go off. So they took five extra minutes in the shower or they burned their toes and made some new.

00:03:40

Xochitl

Toast. So yeah. How about you, Jack?

00:03:43

Xochitl

Do you believe in fate?

00:03:45

Jack

Yeah, I mean, I definitely should because.

00:03:50

Jack

For, I think I told the story of How I Met my wife, but we we met at a school, but we were only friends at that time. We we weren’t dating and.

00:04:03

Jack

And then I I left Korea and I went to another country and she went to another country. And it wasn’t until two years later.

00:04:15

Jack

When I was just walking on the street in Seoul.

00:04:19

Jack

That I ran into her in a city of however many million people there are in Korea.

00:04:24

Xochitl

Like 10 of people or something.

00:04:27

Jack

Just by chance because I didn’t have her phone number. I didn’t have her e-mail. I had no way to to contact her.

00:04:34

Jack

And no idea if I would ever see her again, and suddenly we just ran into each other, started talking on the phone and started dating, and now we’ve been married for 17 years. So I think it’s pretty hard for me to dismiss the idea of.

00:04:54

Jack

8 although I don’t know who’s controlling it.

00:04:55

발표자

Right.

00:04:59

Jack

You know, is this like some the universe or uh God or whatever you.

00:05:06

Jack

Know is that.

00:05:07

Jack

I I don’t know what that means exactly. The idea of fate, but maybe I feel like we were destined to be together.

00:05:17

Jack

Or I could be totally wrong and it was just it’s just chance. It’s like winning the lottery. You know, I won the lottery. I just happened to be there at the right place at the right time. So I don’t know. I guess at the.

00:05:17

발표자

Right.

00:05:32

Jack

End of the day, I mean I’m kind of.

00:05:34

Jack

Of I don’t have any evidence to support it other than my own personal story, but I like to think that like what you said, is that just I’m the fact that I decided to go out that one day to that one place and I happened to meet the love of my life and end up getting married.

00:05:55

Jack

It’s like it’s compounding on one decision compounds and gets bigger and bigger and bigger until it changes your whole life. SO1 tiny decision. Hey, do you want to go out today change the.

00:06:09

Jack

Direction of my life, which is really cool. It’s I think that and maybe maybe that’s what we call fate is just when those decisions turn into something big, we kind of.

00:06:24

Jack

Reverse engineer it into fate. And it’s just, yeah.

00:06:27

Xochitl

Yes, because sorry, go ahead.

00:06:29

Jack

No, no, that’s it. That’s it.

00:06:31

Xochitl

I was just going to say I think that that’s true because there’s like an infinitesimal amount, just like an infinite amount of different.

00:06:41

Xochitl

Things like that that happen. For example, if you had run into her and you guys were just acquaintances and you didn’t talk again, it would have just been like a weird coincidence.

00:06:53

Jack

Right.

00:06:54

Xochitl

But because you guys got married, it’s like ohh. It’s fate in a way. And I I think that your story is really cool. But again, I think it’s like a it’s a butterfly effect. Like there’s no.

00:06:59

발표자

Right.

00:07:07

Xochitl

I like to think that it’s like the work we put into it in a way, because you had that second chance and you took advantage of it to, you know, date her like you took that opportunity that you got. And and I feel like sometimes fate.

00:07:27

Xochitl

The idea of the concept of fate or destiny leads us not to take responsibility for our personal choices or also not like push ourselves as hard because we think if it was meant to happen, it would happen. And I think it really comes down to what you do with opportunities that you’re given.

00:07:44

발표자 3

OK.

00:07:44

Jack

Yes, I think that I think I said this before in another podcast.

00:07:48

Jack

But luck is when.

00:07:52

Jack

Preparation meets opportunity, right is that, you know, it’s a lot of people just attribute.

00:07:58

Jack

Certain things success that people have to luck. Ohh you just got lucky. But it was it was all the work that the person did before that opportunity presented itself that prepared them for.

00:08:12

Jack

That moment, and then that’s what we call luck. And I think that I don’t really. Yeah. So maybe I don’t really believe in luck and I.

00:08:20

Jack

Don’t really believe in.

00:08:21

Jack

Fate. I think it has more to.

00:08:23

Jack

Do with our.

00:08:25

Jack

The decisions you make after that, that moment you you meet that person, you.

00:08:33

Jack

Get that job and then what?

00:08:35

Jack

Do you do with it?

00:08:37

Jack

And that’s the important thing. So yeah.

00:08:37

Xochitl

Right.

00:08:40

Xochitl

  1. Yes, I believe. When I think of the first moment I met my girlfriend, I can tell that I met her by chance. If I wasn’t there that day, would I have met my girlfriend? Everything seems to be fate. It feels like God connected us two.

    1. That’s awesome! I’m leaving a piece of my mind open to the idea of fate, so I’m not completely cynical when it comes to the idea of fate, hehe!
