Jack

You’re listening to the A-Z English podcast.

00:00:13

Jack

The aid is English podcast. My name is Jack and I am one of the hosts of the podcast and today I’m doing a solo episode and this is truly a solo episode because it is just me talking to you.

00:00:30

Jack

About a topic.

00:00:33

Jack

And this will be.

00:00:34

Jack

A quick chat episode. We haven’t done a.

00:00:37

Jack

Quick chat in.

00:00:38

Jack

A while and I want you to send me your.

00:00:42

Jack

Comments about this topic because I’m curious to hear what you think about this topic and so the topic is.

00:00:51

Jack

Or the question I should say is.

00:00:54

Jack

Do you believe?

00:00:58

Jack

In the idea of haunted objects.

00:01:02

Jack

So do you believe in the idea of haunted objects?

00:01:09

Jack

And what that?

00:01:10

Jack

Means is that do you believe that objects can possess or can have?

00:01:18

Jack

Evil spirits.

00:01:21

Jack

So if you.

00:01:24

Jack

Bring some kind of.

00:01:26

Jack

Haunted object some kind of object into your house that has an evil spirit.

00:01:33

Jack

It can bring bad luck and cause mischief.

00:01:39

Jack

In your life, in your home.

00:01:42

Jack

In your relationships.

00:01:45

Jack

And the reason is this object. It has an evil spirit. It’s haunted.

00:01:51

Jack

It could be a doll, it could be a piece of furniture.

00:01:55

Jack

It could be a piece of jewelry, like a ring.

00:02:00

Jack

Or a necklace.

00:02:03

Jack

There are a number of horror movies that.

00:02:09

Jack

Deal with this.

00:02:10

Jack

Topic for example, I’m thinking of the.

00:02:13

Jack

Movie Annabelle and Annabelle is a doll.

00:02:17

Jack

But she is but the doll is possessed by an evil spirit.

00:02:24

Jack

And the evil spirit can cause harm and.

00:02:28

Jack

As I mentioned before, mischief and terror.

00:02:31

Jack

For the people that.

00:02:33

Jack

Are around the doll that that have the doll.

00:02:37

Jack

And so.

00:02:39

Jack

The question today.

00:02:40

Jack

Is do you believe in the idea?

00:02:44

Jack

Of haunted objects.

00:02:47

Jack

And I’m going to. I’m not going to just.

00:02:50

Jack

Throw away this question and.

00:02:51

Jack

Say no, flat out.

00:02:54

Jack

I’m gonna. I’m gonna really think about it and share with you my, my honest feelings about this topic.

00:03:04

Jack

And there there’s before I start there’s there’s kind of an.

00:03:11

Jack

Aspect of this that I want to share with you and that’s that I live in South Korea. I’m an English teacher.

00:03:17

Jack

But I live in.

00:03:18

Jack

In work in South Korea.

00:03:21

Jack

And I’ve lived.

00:03:22

Jack

In Asia, for about half my life.

00:03:25

Jack

Since I was about 23.

00:03:29

Jack

Years old, I have lived in an Asian country.

00:03:35

Jack

Thailand and South Korea.

00:03:40

Jack

And I know that definitely.

00:03:42

Jack

There is a belief in Asia that.

00:03:46

Jack

And this is.

00:03:48

Jack

Not exactly held by everyone, I mean in maybe long, a long time ago, people believed this.

00:03:56

Jack

UM that?

00:03:59

Jack

Evil spirits do exist, and that we need to ward off and to ward off evil spirits means to to push them away, to keep them away, to ward off evil spirits. You would do certain things you could do. There were certain practices or.

00:04:17

Jack

The way that.

00:04:18

Jack

A building is designed. The architecture was meant to ward off evil spirits.

00:04:27

Jack

I think that that idea is still.

00:04:29

Jack

The idea of of objects having evil spirits does exist today because.

00:04:37

Jack

Living in Korea I’ve I’ve got. I’ve found a lot of.

00:04:42

Jack

How can I say this without sounding strange?

00:04:46

Jack

The chair that I’m sitting on right now, the computer chair I have, I found it some outside. Somebody was throwing it away, and it’s a perfectly good computer chair.

00:05:00

Jack

And in America, if somebody were to put this outside.

00:05:06

Jack

An American would grab it in.

00:05:08

Jack

5 seconds and take it home and use it.

00:05:11

Jack

But in Korea I find a lot of.

00:05:13

Jack

People don’t want to use.

00:05:16

Jack

Don’t want used furniture?

00:05:18

Jack

They, you know, they think it’s.

00:05:21

Jack

And I think that it comes from the idea of they don’t want to bring something mysterious into the household, which could be a, an, an evil spirit, a bad spirit or bad luck.

00:05:37

Jack

The the fact that I’m sitting on.

00:05:39

Jack

A used piece of furniture tells you that, obviously.

00:05:43

Jack

I don’t believe in.

00:05:46

Jack

Haunted objects. I don’t believe that objects can possess evil spirits because I have two computer chairs.

00:05:56

Jack

In my office here.

00:05:58

Jack

And they’re both.

00:06:01

Jack

And as we say in English, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

00:06:08

Jack

And so there are two perfectly good perfectly clean.

00:06:16

Jack

Computer chairs.

00:06:18

Jack

The desk chairs and.

00:06:21

Jack

I found them outside and somebody was going to throw them away and to me.

00:06:27

Jack

The idea of throwing away a good chair so it can just go into.

00:06:33

Jack

A landfill, a pile of garbage.

00:06:36

Jack

And sit there.

00:06:37

Jack

For 1000 years, why not use it? You know, recycle.

00:06:42

Jack

I believe in recycling, so I have.

00:06:47

Jack

A computer.

00:06:48

Jack

2 computer desk chairs that are recycled.

00:06:52

Jack

And I’ve got something else too.

00:06:55

Jack

I’m trying to think of what there’s something else that I’m I’m forgetting that I I found.

00:07:02

Jack

Ohh I have a an.

00:07:04

Jack

Exercise machine. Somebody threw away a perfectly good stationary bicycle and it’s a.

00:07:10

Jack

Bicycle that you?

00:07:12

Jack

You don’t go anywhere. It’s not a real bicycle.

00:07:15

Jack

It’s a stationary stationary means not moving.

00:07:19

Jack

And it’s a stationary bicycle and you ride it for exercise. So I can watch TV and ride my stationary bicycle and exercise and burn calories.

00:07:32

Jack

And someone threw away a perfectly good one.

00:07:36

Jack

Probably because it was they were not using it. It was in their apartment and it was taking up space. And so they put it outside. I saw it, I brought it home. I cleaned it up. I fixed a couple things on it and now it’s works perfectly well.

00:07:58

Jack

I have these used.

00:08:00

Jack

Objects that I brought into my house.

00:08:06

Jack

You know, some Korean people would think I’m crazy, they would think.

00:08:10

Jack

How could you take a risk?

00:08:12

Jack

And bring in.

00:08:14

Jack

Some kind of bad spirit.

00:08:17

Jack

We’re unlucky, spirit.

00:08:19

Jack

And I just don’t think I don’t believe in that. I believe objects are just objects, they’re just made of atoms.

00:08:30

Jack

And they they don’t possess any sort of spirit or essence. They’re just things.

00:08:38

Jack

And they cannot.

00:08:41

Jack

Hurt you by themselves? I mean, someone could pick up the chair and they could hit me with the chair and that would hurt me. But really, that’s the person doing it, not the chair. The chair is just a tool. It’s just an object. Same with the stationary.

00:08:58

Jack

Like so. Yeah. So so my answer and this is I’m giving you the long answer here is that I think.

00:09:07

Jack

I think that idea of haunted objects is actually kind of a bad thing, because it stops us from using from recycling. You know, there are a lot of lot of times people throw away good stuff and it just goes into a landfill and it just pollutes the planet.

00:09:28

Jack

Whereas another person could use that object and so I really, you know, part of part of me.

00:09:36

Jack

Enjoys recycling because it’s free, right? I get a free chair or two free chairs and a free stationary bike.

00:09:46

Jack

Those are.

00:09:47

Jack

Can be expensive objects.

00:09:51

Jack

I got it for.

00:09:52

Jack

Free. So that makes me happy. I saved money.

00:09:57

Jack

But the other half of me is happy because these objects are not.

00:10:03

Jack

In the ground somewhere.

00:10:05

Jack

Just polluting the earth with plastic and garbage.

00:10:09

Jack

And they’re actually being used and I’m using them here.

00:10:15

Jack

In my house at my desk, I’m sitting on this chair.

00:10:20

Jack

And it’s very comfortable.

00:10:22

Jack

And so.

00:10:24

Jack

I I think that actually the idea of haunted objects has a kind of negative impact on society.

00:10:32

Jack

But I would love to hear what you guys think. Am I crazy for?

00:10:39

Jack

Liking used objects that could be haunted.

00:10:44

Jack

If you believe.

00:10:44

Jack

In that thing, that sort of thing.

00:10:47

Jack

And I would love to know.

00:10:48

Jack

What you think so?
