In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Jack reads three amazing stories from China.
The Longest Skywalk in the World – Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge:
In August 2016, China opened the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge, the world’s longest and highest glass-bottomed skywalk. This architectural marvel is located in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Hunan Province. The bridge spans about 430 meters (1,410 feet) and is suspended at a height of 300 meters (984 feet) above the stunning Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular tourist attraction for thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
The Panda Reintroduction Program:
China has made significant efforts to conserve one of its most iconic and endangered species, the giant panda. Through dedicated conservation initiatives, such as the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, scientists and conservationists have worked to increase the panda population. One notable success story is the reintroduction of captive-born pandas into the wild. In 2018, a captive-born female panda named “Qing Qing” was successfully released into the Liziping Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, marking a significant milestone in the efforts to protect and reintroduce pandas into their natural habitats.
The Rise of China’s High-Speed Rail Network:
China’s high-speed rail network is a testament to the country’s rapid development and technological advancements. Over the past few decades, China has invested heavily in constructing an extensive and efficient high-speed rail system that connects major cities across the country. One remarkable example is the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, which began operation in 2011. This railway covers a distance of over 1,300 kilometers (about 807 miles) and allows passengers to travel between Beijing and Shanghai in just a few hours. The network has not only transformed the way people travel but also played a crucial role in boosting economic growth and regional integration in China.
