1889: North Dakota and South Dakota become U.S. states – On November 2, 1889, North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted as the 39th and 40th states of the United States. They were both part of the Dakota Territory and were admitted on the same day.
1917: The Balfour Declaration – On November 2, 1917, during World War I, the British government issued the Balfour Declaration, which expressed support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine. This declaration had a significant impact on the eventual creation of the state of Israel.
1947: Spruce Goose’s first and only flight – On November 2, 1947, the Hughes H-4 Hercules, famously known as the “Spruce Goose,” completed its first and only flight. The massive wooden airplane, designed and built by Howard Hughes, had a wingspan of 320 feet and was the largest flying boat ever constructed.
1983: President Ronald Reagan signs the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Bill – On November 2, 1983, U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law, designating the third Monday in January as a federal holiday in honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday, known as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, was first observed on January 20, 1986.
2000: First crew arrives at the International Space Station (ISS) – On November 2, 2000, the first long-term residents, Expedition 1, arrived at the International Space Station (ISS). The crew, consisting of American astronaut William Shepherd and Russian cosmonauts Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev, marked the beginning of continuous human presence on the ISS.
