00:00:12

Jack

Welcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and today I’m here with my co-host social and we are going to talk about our New Year’s resolutions for 2024.

00:00:24

Jack

So social do you?

00:00:26

Jack

Want to go first? Or do you want me to go first?

00:00:29

Xochitl

UM.

00:00:30

Xochitl

Why don’t you go first, Jack and I’ll just let our listeners know a little bit about what New Year’s resolutions are in American tradition, when a new year comes and that’s every January 1st. So it’s a specific date every time. We tend to set a purpose for ourselves to change something.

00:00:50

Xochitl

About ourselves, for the better in the New year. So a lot of people focus on physical health and might do like exercise or weight loss or getting in shape or numerous amount of things, you know, eating healthier, eating.

00:01:04

Xochitl

I mean for the new year, yeah, there are a lot of popular kind of.

00:01:10

Xochitl

New Year’s resolutions, which usually are health based, are spending more time with your family, etc. Yeah, Jack, why don’t you let us know what’s your New Year’s resolution?

00:01:20

Jack

OK, I’ve got three and they’re kind of all working together to make me healthier. And so my first New Year’s resolution, the first one is to I’m. I’m going to get up early, so I’m going to do all this before I.

00:01:36

Jack

Go to work.

00:01:37

Jack

But that’s not part of the resolution.

00:01:39

Jack

That’s just like part of the plan, the bigger plan.

00:01:42

Jack

UM, the first thing that I’m going to do.

00:01:46

Jack

Is I’m not going to drink coffee for 60 minutes after waking up.

00:01:51

Jack

So I’m going to.

00:01:52

Jack

Wait 60 minutes and then I will drink coffee because.

00:01:58

Jack

You don’t want.

00:01:59

Jack

To the the ingredient, the caffeine in coffee activates cortisol.

00:02:05

Jack

And what you want cortisol. You want. You want to naturally wake up with your cortisol. You don’t want to just stimulate it artificially. And so waiting like in like, 60 or 90 minutes to drink coffee is really good. The second thing I’m gonna do is exercise. So I’ve got.

00:02:25

Jack

I I got.

00:02:25

Jack

A an exercise bike. And So what I’ve been doing, what I want to do is spin class from YouTube.

00:02:35

Jack

So I put my phone on the on the bike and I just watch this YouTube channel where they do like a spin class. So it’s like all right, everybody turn up the, you know, turn it to level 8 and and it feels like you’re going up a hill and then turn it down to five. And it feels like you’re going downhill.

00:02:56

Jack

And it’s kind of a fun way to get some cardio exercise.

00:03:01

Jack

And #3, this one’s really crazy. I’m going to do a cold plunge every day.

00:03:10

Jack

And a cold plunge is where you you put a bunch of ice in a in a big bathtub.

00:03:17

Jack

And then so usually it’s just you put it outside like in the winter and it has, you know, ice in it and you break the ice on the top and then you just jump in there for one minute.

00:03:27

Jack

And it’s supposed to activate a whole bunch of hormones and stuff in your body to make you just.

00:03:35

Jack

Feel amazing, but it’s really painful during that like time and you can do it in the shower. I’ll probably do it in the shower, so turn it as cold as my shower can go and then stand under the shower in the cold water for 45 seconds to a minute and I’m going to do that every day. Those three things.

00:03:55

Jack

And see if it doesn’t improve my overall health, but the cold one is really I’m really nervous about it, cause tomorrow’s the first day today is New Year’s Eve here in Korea, so.

00:04:07

Jack

I’m just like I have to start.

00:04:10

Jack

On a good.

00:04:11

Jack

You know first step.

00:04:13

Jack

So tomorrow I’m. I’m really nervous about it.

00:04:16

Jack

Anyway, that was.

00:04:17

Jack

A long answer for a New Year’s resolution. What is? What is your New Year’s resolution?

00:04:22

Xochitl

No, Jack, I really enjoyed yours. I am.

00:04:25

Xochitl

I don’t think you should be too worried about the cold plunge. I used to take only cold showers because I have eczema and the hot water can aggravate it and I actually really enjoyed taking those cold showers that you just get used to it after a while and then you.

00:04:40

Xochitl

I don’t even want a hot shower. Really. Yeah. So I just got used to taking cold showers.

00:04:47

Jack

One of the one of the guys that that on the on.

00:04:51

Jack

On YouTube, on the Internet that was suggesting this, said that you, once you do it, you’ll chase the feeling that you have afterwards forever. Like you. It you for four to six hours. You just feel so awake and alert and amaze.

00:05:08

Jack

Thing and but it but that minute in that cold water is it’s it’s uncomfortable for some for me. I’m I’m sensitive to it. Maybe for you. You know, it’s not that difficult, but I’m. I’m definitely. I hate cold water. I I hate cold swimming pools.

00:05:16

발표자

Right.

00:05:27

Jack

Yeah. I’m. I’m, I’m.

00:05:28

Jack

I’m a wimp when it comes to that kind of stuff.

00:05:32

Xochitl

Yeah, no, I get you. UM, what was I going to say? Well, my New Year’s resolutions are also held focused. I think I just want to.

00:05:42

Xochitl

Focus on my health as much as I can this year.

00:05:48

Xochitl

And that just includes I have, I mean, Jack, you have chronic pain as well, right from a back injury. I as I understand it.

00:05:54

Jack

I’ve had several back surgeries. I’m always having back pain all the time, yeah.

00:06:00

Xochitl

Yeah. Umm, so I suffered from really bad chronic pain. I have a label tear in my hip as you know. And I had a injury to.

00:06:11

Xochitl

Right side of my body some time ago that still like makes the whole right side of my body hurt sometimes and.

00:06:17

Jack

And your ankle too, right?

00:06:19

Xochitl

Yeah, that’s actually my left ankle and the left hip for the label tear. Yeah, and.

00:06:24

Xochitl

So those are.

00:06:26

Xochitl

My legs messed up on that side.

00:06:28

Xochitl

But I recently went.

00:06:29

Xochitl

Into sports medicine clinic and got that checked out.

00:06:33

Xochitl

And I actually.

00:06:35

Xochitl

Went to physical therapy as well, and the physical therapist was really helpful.

00:06:41

Xochitl

And I just trying to make it a priority to get that, you know taken.

00:06:44

Xochitl

Care of.

00:06:45

Xochitl

And try to manage that pain a little bit more. And one thing I did when I was spending Christmas with my grandmother.

00:06:52

Xochitl

She’s 86.

00:06:55

Xochitl

And she has she does still does yoga.

00:07:00

Xochitl

Yeah. And she, you know, most old people are kind of curved over. They’re, like, hunched over. But she has great posture.

00:07:07

Jack

Wow, the Fountain of youth, that’s what they.

00:07:07

Xochitl

And says she doesn’t. Yeah. Yeah. And she says she doesn’t really suffer from chronic pain. And, you know, obviously when you have underlying health conditions, it’s not going to magically cure everything. But I did think it probably helps manage chronic pain.

00:07:11

Jack

Say about yoga, yeah.

00:07:28

Xochitl

And I tried it out while I was at her house and I actually found it really beneficial.

00:07:33

Xochitl

I immediately felt.

00:07:36

Xochitl

It kind of stretching some of that tension that happens as a result of chronic pain, and it really I felt a lot better afterwards.

00:07:44

Jack

Right. Tonic pain is a real is a real bad cycle because it’s like I hurt, so I can’t exercise and I can’t exercise, so I hurt more and then I hurt more and I can’t exercise and it’s just you. It’s like a a downward spiral.

00:08:00

Jack

You know.

00:08:00

Xochitl

Yeah. And then like, you’re constantly feeling pain on that side. So your muscles like tense on that side or like wherever in that location. So yeah, I think my big thing is focusing on my health in that way, like getting the treatment and doing yoga and then.

00:08:17

Xochitl

The other thing I really wanted to do this year is travel somewhere that I’ve never been before. Umm, I like to do that every year I went to Seattle this year, which is somewhere I’ve never been for and I really loved that so much.

00:08:34

Xochitl

And yeah, this year I’m hoping to do that again this coming year.

00:08:38

Jack

Yeah, it doesn’t have to.

00:08:39

Jack

Be like a crazy trip either, right? I.

00:08:41

Jack

Mean there’s probably.

00:08:42

Jack

You know reasonable distances that are new places, you know.

00:08:48

Xochitl

Yeah, you could just go to a town 50 miles out or whatever. But, you know, yeah, just something could be modest, but just some place you’ve never been before. So that’s when another big thing that I want to do. And I think those are probably the big ones. I can think of. I mean, I guess the third one is I.

00:09:08

Xochitl

I wanna stop blaming myself for everything. I I don’t know if you’re this way, Jack. I have a really bad internalized self blame. And when things go wrong in my life or.

00:09:17

Xochitl

Like, I often just blame myself horribly. Like to my own detriment. I’m.

00:09:22

Xochitl

Like this is your.

00:09:23

Xochitl

Fault, just like, not even accountability is a good thing, but it’s just like torturing myself.

00:09:29

Xochitl

About how it’s all my fault, you know? And I.

00:09:32

Xochitl

Just it’s not productive and it doesn’t make me feel good, and I definitely want to stop that. You know, for this coming year.

00:09:39

Jack

I I once I heard a a A guy, a kind of influencer, fitness influencer, say.

00:09:48

Jack

UM, you know, he used to talk to himself like that. You know, like ah, you idiot. Like, why did you do that? Ohh, you’re so stupid. You know, he would have this internal dialogue and he’s like.

00:10:01

Jack

I he thought to himself, I would.

00:10:03

Jack

Never talk to my friend that way.

00:10:06

Jack

Like if you you know.

00:10:07

Jack

What I mean like the way I talk to myself.

00:10:10

Jack

Is so much worse than the way I would talk to. I would never talk to a friend. The way I talk to myself, and that really changed his perspective. He’s like, why don’t I? Why can’t I love myself as much as I love my friend? Because this is my one and only opportunity to live and and to have a a life.

00:10:31

Jack

And yet I spend all my time.

00:10:34

Jack

Berating myself and talking, you know, saying horrible things to myself in my head. So he that really changed his perspective. And so he stopped talking to himself that way, he he decided to make a rule. I will talk to myself the same way I talked to my best friend.

00:10:51

Jack

You know? Uhm.

00:10:53

Jack

Because I at.

00:10:54

Jack

Least deserve as much respect and dignity as I’m as I give my best friend which that that kind of blew my mind a little bit, I.

00:11:02

Jack

Was like wow.

00:11:04

Jack

That’s that’s amazing.

00:11:07

Xochitl

Yeah, I think that’s really important. Like how we talk to ourselves just.

00:11:12

Xochitl

And the way that we view everything in our life around us really has a big impact on our overall health as well, not just mental, but our physical health too, because it’s like, you know, someone else could be going through the same thing and.

00:11:29

Xochitl

Just with a little more sprinkle of a positive outlook and some hope for the future, you can really make a difference in how you feel.

00:11:36

Jack

Absolutely, absolutely. And yeah, it’s like it’s the, it’s the, the physical, the mental, and get enough sleep, you know.

00:11:45

Xochitl

Yep, big one. That’s a big one.

00:11:47

Jack

You could do those. Yeah. You’re in good shape.

00:11:49

Xochitl

Yeah. All right, listeners, I’m curious to hear whether you guys have New Year’s resolutions in your culture. Let us know in a comment down below and let us know what yours is at A-Z, englishpodcast.com.
