Jack

You’re listening to the A-Z English podcast.

00:00:14

Jack

Welcome to the A to Z English podcast. My name is Jack and today I am here with two of my good friends Saalimah from Iran and may from Malaysia.

00:00:24

Jack

Yeah. And we are going to do a would you rather question and today’s question is would you rather have a roommate who constantly cleans but never speaks or a roommate who constantly speaks but never cleans?

00:00:44

Jack

And I’m going to start with Salimeh first. So Salimeh, what would you?

00:00:49a

Jack

In a roommate?

00:00:50

May

Yeah. Jack, maybe you can. Maybe you can before we start maybe.

00:00:53

May

You could define the prove it is it.

00:00:56

Jack

Ohh yeah, that’s interesting. Yeah, OK right. Cause may before we started recording today May mentioned that in Malaysia a roommate is a person who you share a room with and a housemate is someone who lives in your house together. But you have different rooms. And in English we just use the same word for both.

00:01:17

Jack

So if you live in an apartment and you and you share that apartment with another person, but you have two bedrooms and so one person stays in one bedroom and another in the other bedroom, you would still refer to that person as my roommate.

00:01:32

Jack

As your roommate. So yeah. OK, so, Selena, what do you think? Yeah.

00:01:33

May

OK, OK, got it checked.

00:01:37

Salimeh

Thank you. Well, this is easy for me actually, because I would rather to be with the roommate. It will cleanse constantly. No speaking, you know, because I don’t care about the cleanliness and I don’t mind if you know she doesn’t talk at all. So I have still have a clean room.

00:01:57

Salimeh

Clean hands and also I have enough. You know there is no noise. All all silent I can work.

00:02:04

Salimeh

Or study or whatever and you know, and no interrupting or no one is gonna disturb me. So this is my answer.

00:02:14

Jack

So for you it’s OK, like if you’re not friend like close with your roommate. You would rather they just be like a good roommate, but you don’t.

00:02:22

Jack

Have to be friends.

00:02:24

Salimeh

Yeah, yeah. For for me, it’s OK.

00:02:26

Salimeh

Because I can have my own friends.

00:02:29

Salimeh

This is totally fine for me.

00:02:31

Jack

Yeah. Yeah, OK. OK. Alright, that’s pretty good. That’s a good argument. You make a good point.

00:02:36

Salimeh

Yeah, living in dormitory. So we I have.

00:02:39

Salimeh

A lot of.

00:02:40

Salimeh

You know, like a lot, a lot of. But I had a few roommates and I I didn’t, you know, and they not all of them were my friends. We we were just roommates and we were.

00:02:52

Salimeh

Let’s share within room. You know the House, so this is OK for me as long as you know they are clean and care about the cleaning cleanliness.

00:03:00

Jack

Right. And respectful. That’s like pretty important too. You don’t want to have a bad like dynamic or anything, but in this case it’s just a person who’s very quiet but is always cleaning. OK, so you’re going for the clean, the clean house. Alright. May what about you? What? What would you rather have constantly speaks, never cleans.

00:03:20

Jack

Constantly cleans but never speaks.

00:03:22

May

I have this same view as Selima. I prefer to have a roommate.

00:03:30

May

Who is clean and when she when she is clean, obviously she will also clean her room.

00:03:40

May

The house. Maybe the her her bedroom. The the living room.

00:03:47

May

Kitchen so everything is clean. I mean, I can find friends from another side. I can go out and hang and hang out with people at the shop. Or maybe I can call my friend to talk.

00:03:59

May

To however, if she.

00:04:04

May

It’s not a clean person. I will definitely have a hard time because probably she will leave her things everywhere and then she will not throw her rubbish in her room. Maybe she wouldn’t wash her clothes constantly and that will.

00:04:22

May

Create a bad smell from her room and it of course it.

00:04:26

Jack

Right.

00:04:27

Jack

And she’s always talking all the.

00:04:28

May

Would spread.

00:04:29

Jack

I’m right.

00:04:30

May

Yeah, I mean, if she.

00:04:33

May

Talks something nice.

00:04:35

May

It will be fine, but then if you’re talking too much, I mean we need to have our own space as well. So for that reason, yeah, I prefer to have a person clean, but less talking. Yeah, clean, but less talking.

00:04:42

Jack

You guys.

00:04:54

Jack

OK, now I’m gonna.

00:04:56

Jack

Agree with you guys because I think like.

00:05:01

Jack

This is the description of the perfect roommate. It’s very hard to find a roommate who never talks but just cleans all the time. Like how amazingly good would that be? That would be so awesome, right? Just a person that’s kind of hanging out there, cleaning the dishes, doing the dishes.

00:05:20

Jack

Cleaning the table, vacuuming the floor, but then you don’t really even have to, like, talk to them that much. You can just do your own thing, watch Netflix, read a book, whatever, and have your friends, you know, go see your friends and hang out or whatever. I think it’s actually the definition of the perfect women.

00:05:36

May

Yeah. Cool. That’s nice.

00:05:40

Salimeh

In this situation, we can be the targeted person. We can, you know, speak, because we are like a talkative and we love, you know, speak, talk a lot and that can that person can be listener, you know, because she’s she’s quiet and we talk and she listens. So this is.

00:05:57

Salimeh

The perfect match.

00:05:58

Jack

Yeah, that’s true. Right? Like your roommates?

00:06:01

Jack

Just doing the.

00:06:01

Jack

Dishes and you’re just telling, telling your roommate all about your day and all the problems you have. And I got in a fight with my boss or whatever, and they’re just cleaning away and listening to you. Yeah. I mean, it’s the perfect. It’s the perfect roommate, if you designed.

00:06:16

Jack

A roommate in a laboratory.

00:06:18

Salimeh

Right.

00:06:19

Jack

That would be the perfect roommate. Yeah, it would be just like that. Alright, listeners out there. Let us know what you think. Do you agree with the three of us that the quiet roommate who is always cleaning is the best roommate? Or would you prefer someone who is more talkative?

00:06:21

Salimeh

Right there.

00:06:39

Jack

That you can chat with, but let’s the cleaning kind of slide a little bit and is not so.
